The Story Behind the Tree of Life

The tree of life isn't owned by any one culture. It appears in the art of many ancient civilizations, and it has been read in many ways, most often as a symbol of life, growth, and the connection between earth and sky. In rugs, it turns up in Persian, Central Asian, Turkish, and South Asian weaving, which is why a Tree of Life rug can look quite different depending on where its design comes from. The Many Looks of a Tree of Life Rug

The tree can be drawn many ways. Some rugs feature one large tree at the center, its branches spreading across the field. Others set several trees in a grid of separate compartments, much like a garden seen from above, similar to the garden-panel layout we describe on our Bakhtiari Rugs page. Some are filled with peacocks and other birds perched among the branches, and others turn the tree into a landscape, with stripes of color like fields behind it, in a soft, painterly style close to our Gabbeh Rugs. Colors

The collection runs from quiet to bold: soft beige and cream, gray, and sage green, through to warm browns and multi-color landscapes in gold, rust, and rose. Many of the neutral pieces suit a calm room, while the multi-color ones work as a strong focal point.

Materials and Construction

Every Tree of Life rug we carry is hand-knotted from wool, generally on a cotton foundation. Because each branch, bird, and flower is knotted individually, no two rugs end up the same, even when the design is similar.
