A rug that's the wrong size is one of the most common, and most avoidable mistakes people make when furnishing a room. Here's how to get it right the first time, in both feet and centimeters.
The Golden Rule
Size your rug to your furniture, not to your floor. A common mistake is picking a rug based on how much empty floor space is available, rather than the furniture that will sit on it. The result is a rug that looks like an afterthought, too small, floating in the middle of the room, disconnected from the furniture around it.
The fix is simple: measure your furniture first, then choose a rug sized around it, with enough overhang that the rug visually "anchors" the room instead of just filling a gap.
Room-by-Room Guide
Bedroom
This is the #1 mistake we see: sizing a rug to the floor space beside the bed, rather than to the bed itself. When you swing your feet out of bed, they should land on the rug, not the cold floor.
- Compact / EU-style: Twin 5'x7' (150x210cm) · Full 6'x8' (180x240cm) · Queen 6'x9' (180x275cm) · King 8'x10' (240x300cm)
- Spacious / US-style: Twin 5'x8' (150x240cm) · Full 6'x9' (180x275cm) · Queen 8'x10' (240x300cm) · King 9'x12' (275x365cm)
Rule of thumb: the rug should extend at least 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) past the sides and foot of the bed.
Living Room
At minimum, the front legs of every major piece of seating sofa, armchairs, should rest on the rug. In larger rooms, all four legs of each piece sitting on the rug creates an even more grounded, intentional look.
- Compact / EU-style: 4'x6' (120x180cm) small room · 6'x9' (180x275cm) medium room

Dining Room
The rug needs to be large enough that dining chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out to sit down, nothing worse than a chair leg catching the rug's edge mid-meal.
- Compact / EU-style: 4-seat table: 6'x9' (180x275cm) · 6-seat table: 8'x10' (240x300cm)
- Spacious / US-style: 6-seat table: 9'x12' (275x365cm) · 8-seat table: 10'x14' (300x425cm)
Hallway / Entryway (Runners)
Leave 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) of bare floor visible on either side of the runner, and a similar margin at each end, a runner that's too wide for the hallway looks cramped rather than intentional.
