About RugZar

Handmade Rugs from a Family That Knows the Craft

Before There Was a Brand

Long before RugZar had a name, a website, or even a logo, there was a family that knew rugs better than most people know anything.

My grandfather started in a small shop over fifty years ago. He didn't have a brand. He didn't need one. People knew him by his name and by his word. He'd travel for weeks to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, sit with weaving families in their homes and workshops, drink tea, inspect the wool, and come back with hand-knotted rugs he could stand behind completely. If he wouldn't put it in his own home, he wouldn't sell it. That was his rule.

He wasn't building a business in the way people think of it now. He was doing what he loved — finding handmade rugs that had been made the right way, by people who'd spent their lives learning the craft, and getting those rugs into the hands of people who'd value them. It was personal. It still is.

The King of Baluchi Rugs

My father grew up in that shop. He could tell you the origin of a rug by its knot pattern before he was a teenager. But where my grandfather was happy selling locally to people who walked through the door, my father had bigger plans.

He took the relationships our family had built with weavers and artisan workshops across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran and turned the family trade into a worldwide export business. He learned the hard parts himself — how to inspect thousands of rugs and pick the ones worth buying, how to roll and pack a handmade carpet so it survives a trip across the ocean, how to deal with customs paperwork in five different countries. None of that came from a textbook. It came from doing it, year after year.

He became known in the trade as the "King of Baluchi Rugs." Not because he gave himself that title, but because nobody could match his eye for Baluchi pieces — he had thousands of them in different quality grades, origins, and weaving patterns. He knew which villages produced the best work, which dyes would hold their color for decades, and which weavers put the kind of care into their rugs that turns a floor covering into something you pass down to your children. Buyers from across Europe, the Middle East, and North America sought him out by name.

But Baluchi was just the beginning. Over the years, our family expanded into every major category of handmade rugs — Persian, Afghan, tribal, kilim, Heriz, Oushak, vintage, modern, and dozens more. Today we carry 35+ categories with over 7,000 unique designs. My father's reputation started with Baluchi, but his expertise covered everything a hand-knotted rug could be.

He also deepened our sourcing network. He didn't just buy from dealers at a market — he built long-term partnerships directly with weaving families and small workshops. Some of those partnerships are now in their second and third decade. When we say we work directly with the weavers, we mean it. These aren't supplier contracts — they're relationships that go back to my father's handshake.

How RugZar Was Born

I'm the third generation. I grew up hearing the stories, traveling with my father to visit our partners in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and learning the trade from the inside — not from a classroom, but from touching thousands of rugs and slowly understanding why one is worth ten times more than another.

With my IT background, I saw an opportunity: taking our family's expertise online. My grandfather and father were known by their names and their reputations, but that only reached the people they could meet in person or deal with over the phone. I wanted to reach the person in Dallas or Los Angeles or Chicago — or Berlin, or Sydney — who's looking for a genuine hand-knotted rug and doesn't know where to find one they can trust.

So I created RugZar. I built the brand from scratch — discussing ideas with my father, sharing the vision with my brothers — the name, the website, the photography, everything. We invested in showing every rug the way it actually looks: true colors, real textures, honest descriptions with the origin, the weave type, the knot count, the condition. No stock photos. No generic copy. Every listing on rugzar.com is a real rug, photographed in our own facility, and when it sells, it's gone. There's only one of each.

Today, RugZar is an online handmade rug store serving customers in over 70 countries, with a strong focus on the United States, Australia, Germany, and the UK. We carry more than 7,000 hand-knotted and handwoven rugs across 35+ categories — Persian rugs, Oriental rugs, Baluchi pieces (my father's specialty), Afghan and tribal works, kilim flatweaves, Heriz, Oushak, vintage finds, and modern designs that still respect traditional craftsmanship. We ship every order free — to the USA and worldwide.

How We Source Our Rugs

We don't browse catalogs or buy from people we've never met. We have partners on the ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan — people our family has worked with for years, in some cases decades. My father built most of these relationships.

We work directly with the weavers and small artisan workshops. That means we see the rugs before anyone else does. We know who made them, what materials went in, and how long they took. It also means there are no middlemen between the artisan and your living room, which is how we keep prices honest. Our rugs start at €195, and we don't inflate a price just to stick a discount on it later.

Every rug on the site has been hand-picked by someone in our family or by our trusted partners. We inspect the knots, the dye, the wool. If it doesn't pass, it doesn't go on the site. "We'd rather have 7,000 rugs we believe in than 20,000 we don't."

A Note From Our Founder

"I've been around handmade rugs my whole life, and they still stop me in my tracks. A good hand-knotted rug isn't just something you put on a floor — it's months of someone's life, tied knot by knot, passed down through hands that learned from their parents.

They used to call me the King of Baluchi Rugs. I don't know if I earned that name, but I know I earned the knowledge behind it. I've spent decades in the workshops, with the weavers, learning what makes one rug last a lifetime and another fall apart in five years.

My son built RugZar to share what our family has been doing for over fifty years with people all over the world. The rugs are the same quality they've always been. The only thing that's changed is how you find us."
