Gabbeh Rugs
Raw by name, soft underfoot.
A handmade Gabbeh rug looks different from almost anything else in a rug collection: a thick, plush pile, bold blocks of color, and simple, expressive designs that feel more like a painting than a pattern.
The Story Behind Gabbeh Rugs
Gabbeh is a Persian word that means raw, rough, or uncut, a nod to the coarse, unshorn wool and thick pile that define the style. Gabbeh rugs come from the nomadic tribes of southwestern Iran, most famously the Qashqai and Luri, where they were traditionally woven for the weaver's own household rather than for sale.
Because they were made for family use, Gabbeh weavers often worked without a fixed pattern to follow. Designs were simple and personal, built from whatever the weaver chose to put in: a tree, an animal, a figure, or just a bold field of color.
Who Weaves Them
The design tradition is Iranian, but the Gabbeh rugs we carry are hand-knotted by artisan families in Pakistan and Afghanistan, who carry that tradition forward with the same thick pile and bold, uncomplicated look. See our Pakistani Rugs page for more on the design traditions woven there, or our Oriental & Persian collection for rugs that come from the Persian weaving world more directly.
Colors and Materials
Gabbeh rugs are known for saturated, confident color, often in large, open fields with subtle shifts in tone across the surface rather than a tightly packed pattern. Every Gabbeh we carry is hand-knotted from wool, in the same wool or wool-on-cotton construction used across our collection, and the thick pile is what gives it that soft, generous feel underfoot.
A Design That Suits Modern Rooms
That simple, abstract look is exactly why Gabbeh rugs fit so easily into contemporary and minimalist spaces. One bold shape or field of color carries a room without competing with the furniture around it. See our Modern Rugs collection to see how they sit alongside other contemporary styles.
Where Gabbeh Rugs Work Well
The thick pile makes Gabbeh a natural choice wherever you want something soft underfoot, like a bedroom or a living room. Gabbeh also comes in runner shapes for narrower spaces, so see our Hallway Runner Rugs page if that's what you're after.
Caring for a Gabbeh Rug
A thick pile needs a gentle touch: vacuum on a low setting without a beater bar, deal with spills promptly, and book an occasional professional cleaning. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
