Bakhtiari Rugs
A garden, woven one compartment at a time.
A handmade Bakhtiari rug does something few other styles attempt: it lays out an entire garden across the field, one framed compartment at a time, as though you're looking down on it from above.
The Story Behind Bakhtiari Rugs
The Bakhtiari are a large tribal confederation from Iran's Zagros Mountains, part of the broader Lur ethnic group, historically nomadic and semi-nomadic pastoralists who moved their herds between highland summer pastures and lowland winter ones. Their weaving is considered part of the wider Persian rug tradition, though it carries a visual signature distinctly its own.
Who Weaves Them
Bakhtiari rugs are hand-knotted within Bakhtiari families and villages, with weaving skills passed down through generations - the same family-based tradition found across much of Iran's tribal and village weaving.
The Garden Panel: A Signature Design
The defining feature of a Bakhtiari rug is its garden panel layout, sometimes called a khesti design - the field is divided into a grid of individual compartments, and each one is hand-knotted with its own floral, tree, or botanical motif. Seen as a whole, the effect reads like an aerial view of a formal garden, each section its own small scene within the larger design. It's one of the most recognizable and distinctive layouts in Persian weaving.
Colors and Materials
Because each compartment in a garden panel carries its own motif, Bakhtiari rugs tend toward a genuinely varied, rich palette - reds, blues, greens, and golds often appear across a single rug rather than one or two dominant tones. Every piece is hand-knotted from wool, in the same wool or wool-on-cotton construction used across our collection.
Where Bakhtiari Rugs Work Well
The garden panel's rich detail makes a genuine statement piece for a living room or dining room - see our Living Room Rugs and Oriental & Persian pages for more on sizing and the broader Persian design tradition this style belongs to.
Caring for a Bakhtiari Rug
Regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills keep the detail in a garden panel design looking sharp. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
