Waziri Rugs: Hand-Knotted Tribal Area Rugs in Wool

Bold medallions, quiet colors, made by hand.

Waziri rugs are loved for one thing above all: rhythm. Rows of bold medallions march across the field in soft, earthy colors, and the result feels both traditional and relaxed. Each one is a hand-knotted wool area rug made in small batches, so no two are ever the same. Shop the range below, with free shipping to the USA and worldwide.

The Story Behind Waziri Rugs

The name comes from the Waziri people, a Pashtun tribe from Waziristan, the mountain region along the Afghan and Pakistani border. Rugs woven in this tradition borrow from the wider family of Central Asian tribal weaving, where repeating medallions, often called guls, serve as the main motif.

What sets Waziri rugs apart is the way those medallions are handled. They are drawn large and clear, set in a grid, and often surrounded by smaller motifs that fill the space without crowding it. It is a layout that looks organized and still feels hand-made.

What You Will See in a Waziri Rug

Most pieces feature a multi-medallion field: two or three columns of rounded or octagonal motifs repeated down the length of the rug. Colors lean soft and natural, with grey, beige, sage green, ivory and muted blue, and a deep red now and then for contrast. Borders are usually layered and detailed, which frames the field well.

Because the knotting is done by hand, you will notice small shifts in color and shape from one medallion to the next. That is not a flaw. It is the signature of a rug woven by a person, not a machine.

Handmade in Wool, Built for Real Rooms

Our Waziri rugs are hand-knotted in wool, with the foundation listed in the specs on each product page so you can see exactly what you are getting. Wool is naturally resilient and soft underfoot, and it holds up well in the rooms people actually use. The pile feels dense and the colors settle in beautifully with time.

Where a Waziri Rug Works Best

The calm palette makes Waziri rugs easy to place. In a living room, a larger piece anchors the seating and works with both modern and classic furniture. A bedroom gets a warm, soft layer underfoot. The long, narrow pieces suit a hallway well, where the repeating medallions guide the eye down the space.

The same love of medallion layouts runs through our Bokhara rugs, with their classic repeating guls. For softer, more worn-in colors, browse our Ziegler rugs or our wider tribal rugs collection.
