Afghan War Rugs: Handmade Wool Rugs Woven from History

Pictures of a nation, knotted by hand.

War rugs are among the most striking handmade rugs you can put on a floor. Instead of flowers and medallions, the field carries tanks, helicopters, rifles, maps and mountain scenes, all knotted into wool by Afghan weavers. Every one is a piece of living history, and every one is different. Browse our full range of handmade war rugs, with free shipping to the USA and worldwide.

The Story Behind War Rugs

War rugs first appeared after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Weavers who had spent generations knotting traditional patterns began to work the world around them into the design. Over time, the tanks and aircraft of those years became part of the weaving language, and the tradition has continued for well over four decades.

These are not decorations made for effect. They are records of what the weavers saw and lived through, told in the only medium they had: wool, dye and a hand-knotted loom. Some pieces are bold and direct. Others are quiet, with a small helicopter tucked into a border or a map set in the center. Collectors value them as a form of textile art and as a document of recent history.

What Makes a War Rug Different

A traditional Afghan rug repeats geometric guls and borders. A war rug breaks from that. The field might show a row of tanks, a battlefield seen from above, a map of Afghanistan, or a cluster of weapons arranged like a pattern. Many keep a classic border, so the piece still reads as a carpet while telling a very different story.

Most war rugs are woven in deep reds, rust, brown, navy and sand, the same earthy palette found across Afghan weaving. That makes them easier to place than you might expect. They sit well beside leather furniture, dark wood and plain walls, and they give a room an instant talking point.

Handmade in Wool, Built for Real Rooms

Our war rugs are handmade by Afghan weavers, knot by knot. They come in two constructions: wool on wool, and wool on cotton. The foundation is listed in the specs on each product page, so you can see exactly what you are getting. Either way, the pile is wool, which is naturally resilient, soft underfoot and gets better with age.

Each piece is one of a kind, so no two share the same layout, and small variations in color and drawing are part of what makes a hand-knotted piece what it is.

Where a War Rug Works Best

A war rug suits spaces where you want a conversation piece. It looks right in a study or home office, where it can sit under a desk or fill a wall-facing corner. Smaller and longer pieces make a strong statement in a hallway runner, while a larger one anchors a living room with real character.

Use It as a Wall Hanging

A war rug does not have to live on the floor. The imagery is so detailed that many people hang them on the wall, the way you would a tapestry or a piece of framed art. Over a sofa, in a study or down a long hallway, a war rug works as a wall hanging that people stop and look at.
