Tribal & Traditional Rugs
Nomadic patterns and timeless designs, woven by hand for generations.
This collection spans two related but distinct traditions. Tribal rugs were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers across Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, made to travel, built to last, patterned with motifs that once identified which tribe, which family, made the piece. Traditional rugs draw on older, more classic pattern styles, refined, formal designs that have stayed in demand for generations without needing to reinvent themselves.
Tribal: Where the Patterns Come From
Three weaving traditions shape most of what's recognized as tribal design in our collection: the Turkmen, known for tightly repeated gul medallions in deep red; the Baluch, whose nomadic weavings across the Iran-Afghanistan-Pakistan border carry dark, saturated palettes and fine detail despite modest looms; and the Qashqai, a tribal confederation from southern Iran known for vivid color and confident geometric patterning. Each tradition developed its motifs as a kind of visual signature; long before they were sold as decor, these patterns identified where a rug, and its weaver, came from.
Traditional: Classic Patterns, Never Out of Style
Traditional rugs lean on older, more established pattern styles, the kind of design that's been a safe, elegant choice for generations rather than something tied to a passing trend. They tend to read as more formal than tribal pieces, without drifting into the specific city-workshop territory of a fine Persian rug.
Built for Real Use
Tribal rugs in particular were originally made for daily life in a moving household, not for display in a formal parlor, they tend to be dense, durable, and forgiving of heavy use. That makes them a strong match for high-traffic rooms, or for anyone who wants a rug with real presence, not something that fades into the background.
