What Is a Soumak Kilim?

Soumak is a flatweave technique. Instead of passing the colored weft thread straight across, the weaver wraps it around the warp threads, row after row. This builds a slightly raised surface that looks like fine stitching or a woven braid. It also lets the weaver draw crisp, detailed shapes, which is why Soumak rugs so often carry animals, birds and small figures.

The technique is traditionally linked with the weavers of the Caucasus and northwest Persia, including the Shahsavan, and it has spread through Central Asia over time.
