Saghari Kilims: Hand-Woven Afghan Flatweave Rugs in Wool
Flat-woven in wool, rich in color, full of tribal pattern.
Saghari kilims are flat-woven wool rugs with deep reds, warm creams and bold tribal drawing. There is no pile and no knotting here. The pattern is woven straight into the surface, which gives a Saghari kilim its crisp, graphic look and a light, easy feel in the hand. Browse our hand-woven Afghan kilims below, with free shipping to the USA and worldwide.
What Is a Saghari Kilim?
A kilim is a flatweave. Instead of tying knots to build a pile, the weaver passes colored wool threads over and under the warp until the design appears, line by line. The result is a thin, flat rug with the pattern showing equally clearly on its surface.
Saghari kilims are woven by hand in Afghanistan in this flatweave tradition. Our pieces are made entirely of wool, in a palette of red, burgundy, cream and beige, with touches of navy and brown. Many carry the patterned borders and striped ends typical of tribal kilims.
The Look: Geometric, Floral and Tribal
Saghari designs range from rows of small repeating florals to large medallion shapes set in layered borders. Some are busy and colorful. Others are calmer, with a cream field and a few strong motifs. Because every piece is hand-woven, you will see small differences in drawing and shade from one rug to the next, and that is part of their charm.
Why People Love Flatweave Kilims
- Light and flexible, easy to move, roll and store
- No pile, so the surface is flat and sits neatly under furniture and doors
- Bold pattern and real color in a slim, practical rug
- All wool, naturally resilient and pleasant underfoot
Where a Saghari Kilim Works Best
The rich reds and strong patterns suit rooms that could use warmth and character. In a living room, a Saghari kilim grounds the seating with color. In a hallway, a long piece guides the eye down the space. They also work well in a dining area, a home office or an entryway, and many customers hang them on the wall like a tapestry.
