Camel Saddle Bag Rugs: Handmade Tribal Saddlebags in Wool

Nomad craft, made to carry, now made to display.

Saddle bag rugs began as working gear. Nomadic weavers made them in pairs to hang across the back of a camel, loaded with food, tools and belongings for the road. Today they are some of the most characterful small pieces in handmade rug weaving, and one of the easiest ways to add real tribal character to a room. Browse the collection, with free shipping to the USA and worldwide.

The Story Behind Saddle Bags

Saddlebags were woven across the tribal weaving belt, from Iran and Anatolia to Afghanistan and Baluchistan. Families wove them for their own use, so the best examples carry the best work. Weavers put their strongest designs and brightest colors into the front panel, because it was the part everyone could see on the move.

That is why a saddle bag is built the way it is. The front is a hand-knotted wool pile with bold geometric patterns. The back is plain and flat woven, which made the bag lighter and easier to carry. Our saddle bag rugs are all wool on wool, with wool in both the pile and the foundation.

What Makes Saddle Bag Rugs Special

The geometric drawing is the draw. Repeating medallions, diamonds and stepped shapes sit inside layered borders, in rich reds, deep blues, warm browns and ivory. Because they are small, the design is concentrated, and every bag shows off a lot of detail in very little space.

Every piece is different. Hand-knotted by different weavers, no two saddlebags match, and small variations in color and drawing are part of what makes them feel alive.

Ways to Use a Saddle Bag Rug

  • Hang it on the wall like a small tapestry, alone or in a group
  • Lay it by a bed, under a console table or in an entryway
  • Drape it over a chair, bench or the arm of a sofa
  • Turn it into a cushion cover or upholstery accent
  • Add it to a shelf or a corner for an instant tribal touch

A saddle bag works especially well in a reading nook, a study or an entryway, where the scale is right for a short, bold statement. Pair it with a larger tribal rug to build a layered look.
