Patchwork Rugs
Many old rugs, one new one.
A handmade patchwork rug is built from pieces of older rugs, cut and joined into a single new one. Every square carries the pattern of the rug it came from, so one rug ends up holding a whole collection of designs: a medallion here, a border there, a patch of florals next to it.
The Story Behind Patchwork Rugs
Patchwork is an old idea in textiles, a way of giving good material a second life instead of letting it go to waste. Applied to rugs, it means taking sections of older hand-knotted rugs and reassembling them into something new. The result sits comfortably between traditional and modern: the patterns and craftsmanship are classic, but the layout is anything but.
What Makes a Patchwork Rug Distinctive
The patches are the whole look. Each piece keeps its original medallions, florals, geometric motifs, or borders, and they're laid side by side in a mix of squares and rectangles, often with a border running around the outside to frame the whole thing. Because the source pieces are different every time, no two patchwork rugs are alike, and even two rugs in the same colors will never match.
Colors
Many of our patchwork rugs lean warm, with deep reds, burgundies, rust, coral, and gold, often with navy or darker accents to sharpen the patterns. Because the colors come from the original rugs rather than a single dye lot, you get a natural variation across the surface that a one-color rug can't match.
Materials and Construction
Each patch comes from a hand-knotted rug, and the pieces are joined by hand into a new, complete rug. Because they start from older hand-knotted wool pile, you get the density and softness of a knotted rug, with a layout you won't find in a traditional one.
Where Patchwork Rugs Work Well
A patchwork rug is a natural fit for modern and eclectic rooms, where its mix of patterns reads as a deliberate design choice rather than clutter. It's also a good way to bring a traditional palette into a living room or bedroom without committing to a single formal pattern. Caring for a Patchwork Rug
Vacuum regularly on a low setting, and go gently across the seams where patches meet rather than catching them with a beater bar. Blot spills quickly and leave deeper cleaning to a professional. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
