Nakhunak Rugs
A knotted rug with kilim woven through it.
A handmade Nakhunak is mostly a rug, with a dense, soft knotted pile. What makes it different is that flat-woven kilim is worked into the weave at different points across the piece, not just at the ends, so the surface changes texture as your eye moves across it. From a distance you see fine diamonds and warm color; up close you see two weaving techniques made together.
The Story Behind Nakhunak Rugs
Nakhunak rugs come from Afghanistan, from the same family of weaving traditions that gave us other rug-and-kilim combination styles. Fine geometric patterns, worked small and repeated closely, are what the style is known for, and the mix of techniques is a big part of why it stands out from a plain pile rug or a plain kilim.
Pile and Kilim in One Rug
Most of a Nakhunak is hand-knotted pile, and the flat-woven kilim areas are mixed in through it at several places. Both are made on the same loom as one piece, so there's no seam or join to find, just a surface that shifts between the two. That takes more skill than weaving either on its own. See our Rug + Kilim collection for more on this construction, or our Mashwani Rugs page for a related style where the kilim sits at the top and bottom ends.
Colors and Patterns
Warm, earthy color runs through the collection: golden yellows and camels, rusts and oranges, and rich reds, often with cream and olive green accents. The patterns are small, tight, and orderly, with diamond lattices, rows of lozenge medallions, and several narrow borders framing the field. Some pieces stay in one warm tone, while others mix several colors in a busier, jewel-box pattern.
Materials and Construction
Every Nakhunak rug we carry is handmade from wool, with the knotted pile and the flat-woven areas both worked by hand. Weaving a pattern this fine, with such small repeats, takes real patience, and the dense knotting is what keeps the diamonds clean and sharp.
Where Nakhunak Rugs Work Well
The soft pile and warm palette suit a living room or bedroom, and the smaller sizes work well in a hallway or entry. Our Size Guide helps you match a size to your room.
Caring for a Nakhunak Rug
Regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills are all a Nakhunak needs day to day. Go gently over the flat-woven areas and avoid snagging them. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
