A handmade Mashwani is a rug first. The main field is hand-knotted pile, thick and soft underfoot, and then at the top and bottom the weave changes to a flat-woven kilim band, smooth and tightly woven. Both are made together on the same loom as one piece, not stitched together afterward.

The Story Behind Mashwani Rugs

Mashwani rugs come from Afghanistan, where they began as practical household textiles that were also meant to look good, the kind of piece that did its job and carried some decoration along the way. Their geometric diamond designs are the part most people recognize first, and they're a big reason the style has lasted.

A Pile Rug with Kilim Ends

This is what sets a Mashwani apart. Most of the rug is knotted by hand to form a pile, and the ends are woven flat in the kilim technique, so you get the softness of a knotted rug across the floor and a neat, flat finish at either end. Weaving both on one loom takes more skill than doing either on its own. Colors and Patterns

Bold geometry runs through the style, with diamonds and angular shapes repeated across the field. Reds and blues lead, and many pieces bring in deeper jewel tones alongside them, which gives a Mashwani a rich, saturated look even where the pattern stays simple.
