Maliki Kilims
A flatweave with the detail of a much slower rug.
Most kilims keep things simple: bold shapes, a few colors, a pattern you can read from across the room. A handmade Maliki kilim goes the other way. It's flat-woven like any kilim, but it carries the kind of detail you'd normally expect from a knotted rug: central medallions, floral fields, layered borders, and in some pieces even a small picture woven into the field.
What Makes a Maliki Kilim Distinctive
The layout does the work. Many Maliki kilims are built around a central lozenge medallion with finely stepped edges, surrounded by a field of small florals or geometric motifs and framed by several borders, each with its own pattern. Some pieces are pictorial, with a garden scene of trees, animals, and buildings set into the field. Plain striped flat-woven ends finish the rug, which gives all that detail a calm place to stop.
Flat-Woven, and Not Reversible
A Maliki is flat-woven, with no pile and no knots: the pattern is built from colored weft threads woven across the warp. Unlike some other flatweaves, it isn't reversible, so it's made to be seen from the front. If you want a reversible kilim, see our Maimana Kilims, and see our full Kilims collection to compare the other flat-woven styles we carry.
Colors and Patterns
Warm reds and burgundies lead, set against cream, beige, and peach grounds, with navy and darker accents sharpening the outlines. That mix gives a Maliki a softer, more traditional feel than the high-contrast kilims you'll find elsewhere, and it sits comfortably next to wood, leather, and neutral upholstery.
A Quick Note on the Word “Kilim”
Kilim comes from the Turkish kilim, which itself traces back to a Persian word for a woven covering. The technique it describes, interlocking colored weft threads to build a pattern directly into a flat fabric, is shared by weaving traditions all the way from the Balkans to Central Asia.
Materials and Construction
Every Maliki kilim we carry is hand-woven from wool. Weaving this much pattern flat, with medallions, florals, and multiple borders, takes real patience, since every color change is worked by hand.
Where Maliki Kilims Work Well
The layered borders and medallion layout make a Maliki a natural fit under a living room seating group, in a bedroom, or beneath a dining table. Our Size Guide helps you match a size to your room.
Caring for a Maliki Kilim
The flat weave keeps upkeep simple: regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
