Maimana Kilims

Rows of diamonds, woven flat in northern Afghanistan.

A handmade Maimana kilim is easy to spot: deep reds and fiery oranges, a steady rhythm of diamonds, and the confident, graphic look of a pattern built right into the weave. It's one of the most recognizable flat-woven rugs to come out of Afghanistan.

The Story Behind Maimana Kilims

Maimana is a city in the north of Afghanistan, the capital of Faryab Province, and it gives the style its name. The region sits on the old crossroads of Central Asia, where several weaving communities live side by side, and its kilims became known for bold geometric designs woven in strong, saturated color.

Colors and Patterns

Red does most of the talking, from brick and cherry to deep maroon, pushed against orange, navy, and flashes of cream. The designs lean on diamonds: tight lattices that fill the whole field, or larger medallions framed by wide borders. Many pieces finish with plainer striped ends, which gives the pattern room to breathe.

Flat-Woven and Reversible

Like every kilim, a Maimana is flat-woven, with no pile and no knots, and because the design is woven into the structure rather than sitting on top of it, the rug is reversible. It's also lighter and thinner than a knotted rug. See our full Kilims collection to compare the other flat-woven styles we carry.

Materials and Construction

Every Maimana kilim we carry is hand-woven from wool in a tight, tapestry-style weave. That keeps the diamonds crisp and gives the rug real durability for something so lightweight.

Where Maimana Kilims Work Well

The bold red palette adds warmth to a living room or bedroom, and larger sizes suit an open floor plan or a dining room. Our Size Guide helps you match a size to your room, and our Vintage Rugs page covers the Maimana kilims that carry real age.

Caring for a Maimana Kilim

The flat weave keeps upkeep simple: regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
