Kohistani Rugs
Named for the mountains, not a single tribe.
Kohistani takes its name from kohistan, the Persian and Dari word for a mountainous region - a geographic term, not the name of one tribe or weaving community. Several areas across Afghanistan and Pakistan carry the name Kohistan, and the rugs that come from them share a regional identity more than a single bloodline.
The Story Behind Kohistani Rugs
Kohistani rugs are a distinct regional style in their own right, related to but not the same as our Baluchi Rugs, which come from the Baluch people specifically. The two traditions share some of the same mountainous border geography between Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, and that overlap shows up in the weaving - but Kohistani is its own regional identity, not another name for the same thing.
Who Weaves Them
Kohistani rugs are hand-knotted by artisan families across the mountainous regions that give the style its name, using techniques passed down within families rather than taught in a formal workshop.
Colors and Materials
Kohistani rugs are traditionally woven from wool, sometimes blended with goat hair in older pieces for added strength, with many modern pieces built on a cotton foundation. Traditional pieces were often colored using natural, plant-based dyes, giving older rugs a warm, earthy depth of tone; today's production blends that traditional look with more contemporary color choices.
Where Kohistani Rugs Work Well
These hand-knotted rugs suit almost any room, including a living room, bedroom, or hallway. See our Tribal & Traditional Rugs collection for the other regional styles we carry alongside it.
Caring for a Kohistani Rug
Regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills keep a Kohistani rug looking its best. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
