The Story Behind Kazak Rugs
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazakh district in the South Caucasus region, in what's now Azerbaijan near the border with Armenia - not to be confused with the country Kazakhstan, a common mix-up given the similar name. The style flourished through the 19th century, woven by various tribal groups across the region rather than a single weaving community, which is part of why Kazak designs show real variation while still sharing that same bold, confident character.
Who Weaves Them
The Kazak design tradition comes from the Caucasus, but the Kazak rugs we carry are hand-knotted by artisan weavers in Afghanistan, working in that same bold geometric style.
Colors and Patterns
Kazak rugs favor large-scale geometric motifs over fine curves - bold medallions, stepped diamonds, and strong borders in saturated, high-contrast color. Red is one of the most recognizable Kazak field colors, often paired with ivory, navy, or deep green for real visual punch.
