Jaldar Rugs

A net of diamonds, woven edge to edge.

A handmade Jaldar rug skips the single central medallion most Persian-influenced rugs are built around. Instead, the whole field is covered in a continuous diamond lattice, with no empty space left in between.

What Makes a Jaldar Rug Distinctive

Jaldar takes its name from jal, meaning net or lattice, and that's exactly what defines the pattern: rows of diamonds interlocking edge to edge across the entire rug, each one holding a small floral motif. Rather than drawing the eye to one focal point, a Jaldar rug spreads the detail evenly across the whole field, which gives it a fuller, more textured look than a medallion-style rug.

Who Weaves Them

Jaldar rugs are hand-knotted by artisan weavers in Pakistan. See our Pakistani Rugs page for more on the other design traditions woven there.

Colors

The diamond lattice structure is the constant; the color isn't. Jaldar rugs come in a genuinely wide range of field colors, from deep multi-tone blacks to rich reds and soft blues, with the same repeating pattern reading differently depending on the palette. That range makes it easier to find a Jaldar rug that fits a specific room, rather than being limited to one signature color the way some styles are.

Materials and Construction

Every Jaldar rug we carry is hand-knotted from wool, in the same wool or wool-on-cotton construction used across our collection. The all-over lattice pattern is knotted row by row across the full field, with no shortcuts taken for the sections that would be hidden under a medallion in other styles.

Where Jaldar Rugs Work Well

Because the pattern reads evenly across the whole field, a Jaldar rug works well as a grounding piece in a living room or bedroom without competing for attention the way a bold central medallion might.

Caring for a Jaldar Rug

Regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills keep the detail in a Jaldar rug's lattice pattern looking sharp. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
