Heriz Rugs
Bold geometry, built for a room, not just a corner.
A handmade Heriz rug reads differently from most Persian rugs at a glance: a large central medallion, strong angular lines, and a confidence that comes from being designed to be seen across a whole room, not studied up close.
The Story Behind Heriz Rugs
Heriz rugs take their name from Heris, a weaving town in northwest Iran's East Azerbaijan province. Where Persian city workshops like Tabriz and Isfahan developed intricate, curvilinear designs meant for close inspection, Heriz weavers took a bolder, more geometric approach, better suited to village-scale production and to rugs meant to anchor an entire room. That design tradition has since traveled well beyond Heris itself, carried forward today by weavers in other countries entirely.
Who Weaves Them
The Heriz design tradition comes from Iran, but the Heriz rugs we carry are hand-knotted by artisan weavers in Afghanistan, who work in that same bold, geometric style. The pattern's origin and the weaver's hands are two different parts of the story, and both are worth knowing - the design belongs to Heris, but the rug in front of you was made in Afghanistan.
What "Serapi" Actually Means
Serapi isn't a separate weaving tradition from Heriz - it's a grading term. Rug dealers historically used it to describe a particular tier of Heriz rugs, generally older and more finely woven, with a softer, more muted antique color palette than typical later Heriz production. If you see a rug described as Serapi, it's a Heriz rug being singled out for that quality and color character, not a different style altogether.
Colors and Patterns
The signature Heriz layout is a large central medallion set against a field worked in bold, rectilinear shapes rather than fine curves. Brick red and rust are the classic Heriz field colors, typically set off with navy and ivory in the medallion and border.
Materials and Construction
Heriz rugs are hand-knotted from wool, generally with a coarser knot count than a fine city rug like a Tabriz or Isfahan. That's not a shortcoming; it's part of what makes Heriz rugs so genuinely durable, built to hold up in a real, lived-in room rather than serve as a delicate showpiece.
Where Heriz Rugs Work Well
Given their scale and durability, Heriz rugs are a natural fit for a living room or dining room built around a real gathering space. See our Oriental & Persian collection for the wider range of Persian design traditions we carry alongside Heriz.
Caring for a Heriz Rug
Regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills keep a Heriz rug looking its best, and its durable, coarser weave holds up well to that kind of routine care. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
