Filpa Rugs

Named for an elephant's footprint, built around one bold shape.

A handmade Filpa rug is easy to spot once you know what to look for: a few large, confident medallions across a deep red field, instead of dozens of small repeating motifs. The name is a clue to the design itself.

The Story Behind Filpa Rugs

Filpa (also spelled Fil Pai or Fil Pa) comes from the Persian word for elephant, fil, and the word for foot, pa. The elephant's foot in question is the design's large octagonal gul, a medallion whose rounded, layered shape resembles an elephant's footprint. There are no elephants pictured on the rug, just that one distinctive shape repeated across the field.

The style belongs to the Turkmen-influenced weaving traditions of Central Asia and northern Afghanistan, the same broad family of gul-based rugs that also gave us the Bokhara design.

How a Filpa Differs from a Bokhara

Both styles are built around repeating gul medallions, but the scale is what sets them apart. A Bokhara typically packs many smaller guls into tight rows, while a Filpa uses fewer, much larger medallions with more open space around each one. The result feels bolder and less busy, which is why many people reach for it when they want a strong pattern without a crowded look.

Colors and Materials

Deep, rich reds are the signature Filpa color, often set against darker tones such as navy or black and lighter accents in ivory. Every Filpa rug we carry is hand-knotted from wool, in the same wool or wool-on-cotton construction used across our collection, which gives it a dense, durable pile that holds its shape well.

Where Filpa Rugs Work Well

The large, symmetrical medallions make a Filpa rug a natural statement piece for a living room or dining room, and the red palette warms up a neutral space quickly. See our Red Rugs collection for more on styling with red, or our Tribal & Traditional Rugs collection for other rugs from related weaving traditions.

Caring for a Filpa Rug

A dense wool pile like this one rewards simple habits: regular light vacuuming, prompt attention to spills, and an occasional professional cleaning. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
