Doormats

The first handmade piece a guest ever steps on.

A doormat does real work before anyone even notices it - trapping dirt and moisture at the door, so the rest of your home stays cleaner for longer. A handmade one does that job while also being the very first thing a guest sees of your home. We offer a selection of handcrafted doormats drawing on four recognizable rug traditions - Akcha, Khal Mohammadi, Ziegler, and Kazak - each bringing its own pattern language to your entryway.

Why a Quality Doormat Actually Matters

Keeping Interiors Clean

The core job of a doormat is trapping dirt, dust, and moisture before it ever reaches your floors. A densely hand-woven mat is genuinely more effective at this than a thin synthetic one, and it means less frequent cleaning for the rugs and flooring just past your entryway.

Adding Style and Personality

A doormat is often the first thing a guest notices, so it sets the tone before they've even stepped inside. Our handmade Akcha, Khal Mohammadi, Ziegler, and Kazak designs bring genuinely distinct pattern and color into that first impression, rather than a generic mat that could belong to any house on the street.

Reducing Slips

A dense, textured mat gives more grip underfoot than bare flooring, which helps when shoes are damp from rain or snow. It won't replace common sense on a genuinely wet floor, but it does reduce how much moisture gets tracked past the entryway in the first place.

Protecting Your Floors

Grit and moisture are what actually damage hardwood, tile, and carpet over time - a durable mat at the door reduces how much of either reaches the floors you actually want to protect.

Doormat Designs We Carry

Akcha

Known for bold red tones and traditional geometric motifs with a strong sense of symmetry, Akcha doormats carry a classic tribal feel rooted in Afghan weaving traditions.

Khal Mohammadi

Deep, rich tones - dark red, black, indigo - define the Khal Mohammadi style, often built around refined, medallion-like patterns that read as more formal than some of our other doormat designs.

Ziegler

Ziegler patterns lean softer and more intricate, drawing on Persian floral and vine motifs for an understated, sophisticated look that fits neutral or minimalist entryways particularly well.

Kazak

Inspired by Caucasian weaving traditions, Kazak doormats bring bold geometric patterns in vibrant reds, blues, and yellows - a lively, rustic option for anyone who wants real color and character at the door.

Choosing the Right Doormat

Size: pick a mat large enough for both feet to land on it comfortably when you step in - that's what actually makes it effective at trapping dirt. Wider entrances or double doors may call for a larger mat, or see our 1'5" x 2' page for our smallest standard size specifically built for this spot.

Material: wool and wool-on-cotton hold up well in high-traffic spots and trap dirt more effectively than most synthetic options. If durability matters most, a flat-woven kilim construction is worth a look too - it tends to clean up faster than a plush pile in a spot this exposed to daily wear.

• Design: let the pattern set the tone - Ziegler suits a neutral, minimalist entry, while Kazak brings real color to a more rustic or eclectic home.

Caring for a Handmade Doormat

• Shake or vacuum regularly with a brush attachment to keep the fibers clean and effective.
• Spot clean stains with a mild soap solution - avoid harsh chemicals, which can damage natural fibers and fade color over time.
• Keep it out of prolonged direct sun where possible, since extended exposure can fade any dyed textile over time.
• If it gets wet, let it air dry completely before placing it back down, to avoid mold or mildew.

A handmade doormat is a small piece, but it's still hand-knotted or hand-woven with the same care as anything larger in our collection - our full Rug Care guide covers more detail if you want it. This is the first, and easiest, way to bring real craftsmanship to your entryway.
