Bokhara Rugs
Named for a trade route, woven by nomads.
A handmade Bokhara rug takes its name from a place most of its weavers never actually lived - which is exactly what makes the story behind it worth knowing.
The Story Behind Bokhara Rugs
Bukhara was one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road, in what's now Uzbekistan, and for centuries it served as a major marketplace where goods - including handmade rugs - were bought, sold, and shipped onward to the rest of the world. The rugs that came to be called "Bokhara" weren't necessarily woven there; they were largely made by Turkmen nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, then traded through Bukhara's markets in such volume that the city's name stuck to the style itself in the West.
Over time, the weaving tradition and its recognizable patterns spread well beyond Turkmen communities, and today genuine hand-knotted Bokhara-style rugs are woven by artisan families across Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
Who Weaves Them
The Bokhara rugs we carry are hand-knotted by artisan weavers in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, carrying that Turkmen-originated design tradition forward in two different weaving communities rather than just one. See our Pakistani Rugs page for more on how design traditions from across the region are woven there today.
Colors and Patterns
The defining feature of a Bokhara rug is its repeating oval medallion, known as a gul - rows of these motifs across the field are what make the style instantly recognizable. Deep, saturated reds are the classic Bokhara color, though the pattern is also hand-knotted in other rich tones.
Where Bokhara Rugs Work Well
Bokhara rugs are versatile enough to work in almost any room - see our Hallway Runner Rugs and Bedroom Rugs pages for sizing guidance in either space.
Caring for a Bokhara Rug
Like any hand-knotted wool rug, regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills go a long way. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
