Barjasta Rugs
Two weaving techniques, one handmade rug.
A handmade Barjasta rug does something most rugs don't: it genuinely combines two different weaving techniques in a single piece, not just a single tradition rendered in one style.
The Story Behind Barjasta
Barjasta rugs come from the Taimani people, an ethnic group native to Afghanistan's central highlands. Like much of the region's tribal weaving, Barjasta rugs began as practical, everyday floor coverings before their bold patterns took on real cultural weight - symbols and layouts that carried meaning within the community, not just decoration.
Who Weaves Them
Taimani weavers hand-knot and hand-weave each Barjasta rug using skills passed down through generations, the same family-based tradition found across much of Afghanistan's tribal weaving.
A Hybrid Weave, Not Just a Kilim
This is the detail most descriptions of Barjasta rugs get wrong: it isn't a kilim. A genuine Barjasta rug combines hand-knotted pile sections with flat-woven kilim sections in the same piece - dense, plush texture in some areas, a flatter woven surface in others. See our Rug + Kilim collection for more on this hybrid construction and the skill it takes to weave both techniques into one rug.
Colors and Patterns
Barjasta rugs favor deep reds, blues, and browns worked into bold, symbolic geometric layouts - large medallions and stylized animal figures are common, rendered with real confidence rather than fine, delicate detail. Traditionally, these pieces were dyed using natural, plant-based dyes local to the weaving region, giving older pieces their characteristic earthy depth of color.
Where Barjasta Rugs Work Well
The flat-woven sections of a Barjasta rug add real practical durability alongside the softness of the knotted pile, which makes these versatile enough for a living room, bedroom, or kids' room alike.
Caring for a Barjasta Rug
Because a Barjasta rug combines two weave types, both the pile and flat-woven sections benefit from regular light vacuuming and prompt attention to spills. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
