Vintage Rugs
Old Age, real character - rugs with history already woven in.
Vintage rugs are more than floor coverings - they're woven pieces that have already lived a life before they reach you. Most of ours are sourced from Iran and Afghanistan, regions with centuries of weaving tradition behind them, and the collection spans everything from finely knotted Persian pieces to bold, flat-woven Afghan kilims. Standout styles include Kashan, Isfahan, and Maimana Kilim, each with its own construction, region, and character.
A Brief History of Persian and Afghan Rugs
Rug weaving in this region goes back thousands of years, with early evidence found in archaeological sites across Central Asia. Persian rugs in particular carried real status historically - fixtures in palaces and the homes of the affluent, not just practical floor coverings. Afghanistan's weaving tradition developed alongside it, shaped by the many cultures that passed through the region over centuries, producing kilims and knotted rugs with their own distinct character.
Signature Styles
Kashan
Kashan rugs come from the city of Kashan in central Iran, known for intricate floral patterns, rich color, and genuinely high knot density - a plush, soft pile that's held up as a benchmark of Persian craftsmanship for generations. Expect elaborate medallions, curvilinear floral motifs, and deep reds, blues, and golds. A vintage Kashan often carries a slight natural patina - not a flaw, but a sign of real age and use.
Isfahan
Isfahan rugs, from the city of the same name, are widely considered among the finest Persian rugs made. Traditionally hand-knotted from fine wool with a high knot count, they're built for both durability and a genuinely luxurious feel underfoot. Designs tend toward detailed floral patterns and medallions, sometimes extending into scenes drawn from nature, with careful color blending that gives the pattern real depth.
Maimana Kilim
The Maimana Kilim comes from Afghanistan and takes a completely different approach, flat-woven rather than knotted, with the warp and weft threads interlaced directly to form the pattern, no pile involved. That construction makes for a lighter, more versatile textile. Maimana Kilims lean into bold geometric motifs, diamonds, zigzags - in richly saturated color, and their flat profile makes them just as suited to a wall hanging as a floor.
The Case for a Vintage Rug
A vintage rug carries something a new piece can't fully replicate: real history. Most of ours genuinely are aged, pre-owned pieces, not new rugs styled to look old - the character comes from actual use and time, not a manufactured finish. That history is exactly what makes a vintage piece a natural focal point in a room, and part of why they sit comfortably in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
Caring for a vintage piece takes a little extra attention - see our full Rug Care guide for the details. Not sure what size fits your space? Our Size Guide breaks it down room by room. For the full range of individual patterns, see our Carpets from A to Z guide.
