Moroccan Rugs

Woven from memory, not from a pattern book.

A handmade Moroccan rug has a looseness you can feel right away. The lines aren't ruled, the shapes aren't perfectly repeated, and that's the whole appeal. It's one of the most personal rug traditions in the world, and it has become one of the easiest to live with in a modern home.

The Story Behind Moroccan Rugs

Moroccan rugs come out of the Amazigh (Berber) weaving tradition of the Atlas Mountains, where women have woven for their own households for generations. These were never made to be sold from a design catalog. They were bedding, floor coverings, and wraps for a family's own use, and the weaver usually worked from memory and instinct, so the symbols and layouts carry personal and community meaning rather than a standard template.

The Styles You'll Hear About

Moroccan weaving isn't one style, it's many, and each region has its own look. A few names come up again and again.

Beni Ourain rugs come from the Middle Atlas and are known for thick, soft pile in natural ivory with dark, linear diamond patterns, the classic minimalist Moroccan look. Azilal rugs, from the High Atlas, go the opposite way, with free, improvised compositions in bright color. Beni M'Guild rugs bring deep reds, burgundies, and dark blues into dense geometric designs, usually with a shorter pile. Boucherouite rugs are made from strips of reused fabric rather than fresh wool, which gives them a bright, patchwork character. And flat-woven Moroccan kilims trade the pile for a lighter, thinner weave with crisp geometry.

Rugs and Kilims in Our Collection

We carry both. The pile rugs are soft and warm underfoot, and the kilims are flat-woven, lighter, and easy to move or layer. Each listing tells you which construction you're looking at, along with its size and origin. See our full Kilims collection for more on the flat-woven side.

How Moroccan Rugs Differ from Persian Rugs

A traditional Persian workshop rug is usually planned in advance, with an exact design worked out and followed closely. A Moroccan rug is closer to a drawing made by hand, with small shifts in line and color that make every piece slightly different. Neither is better; they just feel different in a room. Our Oriental & Persian collection covers the more structured side if that's the look you're after.

Colors and Patterns

The palette runs from quiet to loud. You'll find soft ivory and charcoal pieces with simple diamond lines, earthy neutrals, and vivid multi-color designs with bold shapes. The common thread is geometry, diamonds, zigzags, and lattices, drawn with a freehand confidence rather than machine precision.

Where Moroccan Rugs Work Well

The relaxed, graphic look suits modern and minimalist rooms especially well, and it's just as comfortable in a bohemian or eclectic space. Try one in a living room or bedroom, where a soft pile underfoot makes a real difference.

Caring for a Moroccan Rug

Thick-pile wool rugs can shed a little at first, which is normal, and a few weeks of regular vacuuming on a low setting settles it. Keep up with spills and avoid harsh cleaners. Our full Rug Care guide covers the details.
