Getting the Size Right
The rug needs to be large enough that dining chairs stay on it even when pulled out to sit down - but not so large it overwhelms the room. Sizing generally scales with your table's seat count: a 4-seat table needs less footprint than an 8-seat table.

Matching Shape to Your Table
The shape of your dining rug should generally follow the shape of your table. A round or square table pairs naturally with a round or square rug. A rectangular table calls for a rectangular or square rug - something that echoes the table's own lines rather than working against them.
Choosing a Practical Color
Dining rooms see more spills and crumbs than almost any other room in the house, so very light colors tend to show wear the fastest.
If practicality matters as much as style, black and brown or tan tones hide daily wear especially well.
Consider a Flat-Weave
